Focus on Facilities Improvements: Decker Health Science Center Roof Leaks Fixed

December 15, 2011

Several years ago our Decker Health Science Center roof began leaking, and it has been an ongoing challenge since to identify the cause and remedy it in a lasting way.  Recently we  consulted with a roofing expert who advised us that the leaks were caused primarily by design and workmanship issues.   A short and long-term plan was developed, and the short-term piece was immediately implemented to fix the leaks as much as possible before winter sets in.

Limestone had been used as a decorative stone to cap the brick walls around the entire building, and after years of heavy rain the limestone had begun to break down, with water soon finding its way in between the brick walls, staining and destroying ceiling tiles and making watermarks on walls.  Some of the lime stones were also found to be missing the required control joints in between that ensure water tightness, and in addition some of the lime stones were also missing “drip cuts” that catch the traveling water before it can reach the building, preventing it from dripping down the brick.

Our short term fix was started a month ago – we repaired missing or damaged control joints, and then covered the entire limestone with the same rubber material that was used on the roof.  The short-term fix is about 70% of the entire repair but addressed 95% of the problems.  Our long-term phase will begin in early April – the rubber material will be capped with metal, and the building brick with be sealed with water repellant sealer.  This long term fix will be completed by mid to late June and will last approximately 25-30 years.

Irene Byrnes Receives 2011 Hallmark Award as Phi Theta Kappa Advisor

December 15, 2011

Phi Theta Kappa International, the two year international honor society, has awarded Professor Irene Byrnes the Distinguished Advisor Award for 2011. This is a Hallmark Award based on the unanimous nomination of  Professor Byrnes by the student leaders of the Executive Board of the campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Professor Byrnes would like to acknowledge and thank the detailed and generous letters of support written on her behalf by the student President of the campus chapter and the College President, Dr. Drumm.

Professor Byrnes would also like to acknowledge that she works closely with hard-working student leaders whose efforts have greatly contributed to the receipt of this award.

Further Professor Byrnes notes that an honor such as this is impossible without,  and owes much to,  the key campus personnel who actively support the success of Phi Theta Kappa, and its outstanding student leaders and emerging scholars, on a daily basis.

She wishes to thank and acknowledge, in addition to Dr. Drumm, the following members of the campus:  Julie Peacock, Debra Morello, Marty Guzzi, David Maslar, Cheryl Heath, Rhoda Neal, Kelly Page and Patricia O’Day.

BCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Earns Pinnacle Award

December 15, 2011

BCC’s  Phi Theta Kappa chapter has just earned the prestigious Pinnacle Award  because it has successfully increased membership enrollment in the campus’ two-year International Honor Society by over 25%.

Professor Irene Byrnes, Faculty Adviser to Phi Theta Kappa, notes that the honor society  would not have the Pinnacle Award today without the active efforts of the following student leaders on Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Board:

Student Leaders from Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Board:

  • Christopher Connolly, Chapter President
  • Kevin Cushner, Executive Vice-President
  • Katelyn Madison, Vice-President of Finance
  • Thomas Larison, Vice-President of Leadership
  • Elizabeth Reichert, Vice-President of Membership and Fellowship
  • Megan Price, Vice-President of Internal Communications

Professor Byrnes also notes that earning the Pinnacle Award would not have been possible without the active support of the following key campus personnel: Dr. Kevin Drumm, Julie Peacock, Debra Morello, Marty Guzzi, David Maslar, Cheryl Heath, Rhoda Neal, Kelly Page and Patricia O’Day.

BCC Student Trustee Invited to Lunch with SUNY Chancellor Zimpher

December 15, 2011

Willie Murray , our student elect to sit on the Board of Trustees, was invited by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher to join her for lunch! On November 29, armed with a gift bag full of treats and sweets (much of which was provided by Student Assembly, Student Activities and EOP), Willie went to Albany to see the Chancellor. They discussed many things, including BCC. Chancellor Nancy’s follow-up letter to Willie states: “ I just wanted to tell you what a pleasure it was to meet you…thank you for the bag of BCC goodies. That was an incredibly thoughtful gesture and I appreciate it. Also I am pleased with your interest in SUNY Advantage and your interest in helping us move ahead with it.”

As BCC  continues to be recognized as a leading institution to be included in collaborative dialogues about the future of education on our campus, in our State, and beyond, we get confirmation that we have the right leaders in the right place for such a time as now!

Communications Students, Faculty Attend Nickelodeon Workshop

December 15, 2011

Nearly two dozen BCC Communications students and faculty attended a Nickelodeon Studios Writing Fellowship workshop, at the campus of TC3 in Dryden, December 9th.

The workshop walked participants through the story and script development process of Nickelodeon TV programs and gave guidelines for submitting story outlines and concepts in applying for a Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship.

“This was a relevant communication industry contact,” said Jason Detrani, Coordinator of BCC’s Communications and Media Arts program. “We had a valuable opportunity to take our students to a workshop where they could gain insight into a TV industry writing program.”

The opportunity was remarkable for BCC Communication students, who made up a large part of an audience that included students from Cornell University, SUNY Oswego, Le Moyne College and Ithaca College.

Nickelodeon, which is owned by Viacom, Inc., awards four fellowships a year to aspiring television script writers.

The $45,000 fellowship, along with a year long immersion in Nickelodeon’s TV Production environment, gives fellowship recipients lots of professional contact in the entertainment world. In past years the Fellowship opportunity has led to scriptwriting jobs that pay in excess of $100,000.

The 18 students and four faculty members from BCC also spent time with the Communications Department staff at TC3, who gave a tour of their facilities. TC3 has an online radio station and studios and several photo and video production labs.

“It is always good to get outside our own box and see the program and facilities of one of our sister programs,” Detrani said.

BCC Corporate Challenge Practice #1

December 15, 2011

Starting this week of November 28, 2011, we (all who take up the challenge with me because there is no “I” in Team) will be holding our first practice for the 2012 Corporate Challenge that will be hosted again by BCC.

Following Tom Carter and running with Rob Woods in my first 5k race ever last year, I know it takes more than a one-n-done effort.  There are three events that we are training for:
1. The women’s and men’s 5k race
2. The mile relay race
3. The timed mile

WAIT .. don’t go, come back…  Everyone needs exercise and we’re starting very, VERY slowly so we can increase the workout gently over a long period of time.

How it works:

Participation:  Everyone who can run or walk.

Rules: Grab a stop watch at Jeff’s office – B123D. Record your date, event and time. Please send all results to hatalajm@sunybroome.edu

When: The time will be managed by you and your partner(s).  The first official practice will be on Monday, November 28th at 11:00am.  We will meet at the starting point for a 5k run.  I know that Meigo will be joining me.  Are there others?

Goal for Today:  Pick at least ONE day and time that you can team up with someone to train with.  Here is why you need at least one partner.   It will go something like this.
“Jeff, are you ready?” said Meigo.
“No, I don’t feel like it today.” said Jeff.  “I have work to do and a meeting to get ready for.  How about next week?”
“Come on Jeff, I need you and you know how energized we feel after the work out. How many times have you said after its over, Thanks, I needed that?” says Meigo.
“Alright, let’s make it a good one.” says Jeff.

Events:

5k and Mile track

Weather permitting, we will be running outdoors to enjoy the wonders of what our God has created. Once the slush is on the road we will be moving practice inside.

One Mile Relay

Run one mile and keep your time.  This race is exciting because it’s ALL OUT for one mile as you and your team strides to be faster. The whole team is behind you… or in front of you depending on which leg of the race you run. :)

The Timed Mile

Follow this track for one mile or walk the way the challenge course was set up.  Let me know if you would like that route.  This event is going to be the most popular, because almost everyone can walk. Whether it’s for a healthier you or a better BCC team, we need you to seriously consider this.  Do you need a little something different to super charge your body?

You DO NOT have to enter the Corporate Challenge if you don’t want to but PLEASE consider doing a little extra to get your heart pumping. Call it exercise, a work out, sweating or de-stress techniques, bcc meeting, social working with your partner(s).

I have a dream to both work hard and play hard with a team effort that moves us to do the seemingly impossible.

Last year:

Look Below…

Come on, You CAN do it!

Think about it, you CAN!!!!

Step out of the comfort zone and take a chance….

The Corporate Challenge, June 2012. This x 5!  We CAN DO IT!

I hope we do see many of you in yellow and black.

Thanks!
Jeff Hatala (Corporate Challenge Service Announcement for Tom Carter)
